A fun and friendly day of cycling for all ages and abilities, the BEL Rotary Bike for Your Hospital will takeplace Saturday, September 15, 2018 starting at Isabel Morris Park in Lakefield. Participants can ride attheir own pace with friends and family on the beautiful Lakefield waterfront and throughout the Kawartha countryside, followed by a post-race party featuring delicious local food and craft beers.
David Tilley, BEL Rotary Club member and organizing committee representative, says the event is suitable for everyone from novice to very experienced riders. “There are five routes of varying distance and difficulty level so there’s really something for everyone,” says Tilley. “Participants can choose from 25KM or 45KM supported routes, or the more challenging, 70 KM “Gravel Grinder”, 78 KM and 106 KM routes.”
The third year for the event, the ride is also a fundraiser with 100 percent of proceeds supporting local community initiatives and projects. Formerly the BEL Rotary Bike for Hospice, the event previously supported the now successfully completed “Every Moment Matters” campaign for Hospice
Peterborough. “We’re extremely proud of the contribution we were able to make towards building a new residential
hospice here in Peterborough,” says Tilley. “When the time came to choose a new beneficiary, we knew we wanted to continue that tradition of supporting the health of our community. With the hospital serving hundreds of thousands of patients from across our region every year, choosing to
support the PRHC Foundation was the natural next choice.” Lesley Heighway, PRHC Foundation President & CEO says the Foundation is honoured to have been chosen as the new beneficiary and successor to such a worthy cause.
“Community events like the BEL Rotary Bike for Your Hospital are the life blood of our success,” says Heighway. “We’re extremely grateful any time volunteers choose to support patient care by fundraising on our behalf.”
Heighway says the proceeds of the 2018 BEL Rotary Bike for Your Hospital will support new dedicated trauma X-Ray suites for PRHC’s Emergency Department.
BEL Rotary is “gearing up” again for a great cause!
“There were more than 87,000 patient visits to PRHC’s Emergency Department in 2017/18,”says Heighway. “The doctors and nurses there must be able to access diagnostic imaging equipment like Xrays 24-7. In fact, more than 23,000 X-Rays originated in the Emergency Department last year alone.
With your support, we can help bring the latest X-ray technology to PRHC, enabling faster machines with higher-quality images, and providing more accurate results to you and your loved ones.” Participants can register as individuals or part of a team. The event is open to all ages, however participants 16 and under must be accompanied by an adult. The cost to register is $65.00 for adults (until September 1st when the price increases to $75) or $40.00 for youth under 18. Participants are also encouraged to fundraise a minimum of $100 in support of the cause.
