Woven Together: A Pride Sewing Workshop in collaboration with The Flamingo House

Coming off the success of the first event “Pride + Boba” which raised $277 for the Peterborough AIDS Resource Network, the follow-up in this event series will be Woven Together: A Pride Sewing Workshop to be held on July 17th, 5PM-8PM at the Artisans Centre, 360 George St in Peterborough Square lower level, and will facilitate social connection and skill building in an inclusive space.

Entry is $5 or Pay What You Can.

The event venue, the Artisan’s Centre Peterborough, is a non-profit social endeavour located in Peterborough Square that aims to preserve and promote traditional heritage craft skills in Peterborough and the Kawarthas through teaching the public and promoting local artists and artisan groups.

The event is also held in collaboration with The Flamingo House, a queer sewing group in Peterborough that offers tailoring services and sewing project assistance every Saturday during the Peterborough Farmers Market. For an entry fee of $5 or Pay What You Can, attendees will have materials and tools provided and receive guided instruction on how to create their own Tsuchinoko doll, a fat snake that is a mythical creature in Japanese folklore.

The event is also sponsored by PARN: Peterborough AIDS Resource Network, who will be in attendance with a table offering free condoms and education on safe sex.

Following the first event in the series of Pride events that organizers Michael Bishop and Nikki Lawrence have begun this year, Woven Together aims to continue outreach to the 2SLGBTIA+ by offering fun events that are safe, inclusive and appeal to a variety of interests. The “Roxxy Waters presents…” event series is planned to continue monthly from July to September with a finale party occurring during Peterborough Pride celebrations.

This event, Woven Together, was inspired by the value that sewing plays in mental health and self-regulation, building community and growing skills that contribute to art projects as well as everyday mending and the right to repair. Roxxy Waters declares: “Every thread tells a story, and every person strengthens the fabric of our community. Woven Together celebrates the power of creativity, belonging and connection. Reminding us that when we come together, we create something stronger than any of us could alone.” Roxxy Waters is looking forward to seeing you July 17th, 5PM to 8PM to participate in this fun and chill sewing night!
